Information

Item code: 302642

Based on the old Plunder model but more versatile, with a 5-fin set-up, less volume and added performance chops.

Features:

  • Shaper: Hayden Cox
  • Construction: PE-C (PU blank x epoxy resin x composite stringer)
  • Outline: Lovely fulsome plan shape, the wide point pushed forward of centre and tapering into a subtly curved, drawn-out rail line
  • Tail: Diamond
  • Rocker: Low rocker profile throughout
  • Concave: Rolled vee into moderate single concave back into a moderate vee under the back foot
  • Materials: Traditional polyurethane foam core, but glassed with epoxy and featuring a composite stringer
  • Fin Set-Up: 5 fin
  • Fin System: Futures
  • Suitable Conditions: Great everyday board, and will handle solid surf too
  • Rider Ability: Beginner to advanced

Boasting a gorgeous outline that's pretty much unique in today's market, complete with an exquisite diamond tail, the Loot will help you strike gold every time you paddle out. The treasure, the booty, the elusive little nugs that make a session – the Loot knows where to find them, and will lead you to them without fail.

It's a very good-looking surfboard, even by Haydenshapes standards, and it also looks insanely fun to ride. Ample surface area and volume translate into outstanding paddle power, while the outline and bottom shape lend themselves to effortless trimming. But as demonstrated by Jake Kelley, who surfs it beautifully in the vid below, it can still take to the air, thump a section for six, and handle powerful surf in the head-and-a-half range no worries.

More experienced surfers will likely ride the Loot as an everyday shortboard, or a fine-tuned and chuckable funboard. But the Loot is definitely beginner-friendly when appropriately sized – between 6'2" and 6'6" it would do a fine job as a first shortboard. Those of a cruisier, less performance-driven disposition might also opt for something around this length, and ride the Loot as a cruiser or downsized mid-length.

A brief note on the construction. Unlike Haydenshapes' trademark FutureFlex technology (think parabolic carbon rails, Hypto Krypto etc.), the Loot features a traditional PU foam core (as opposed to EPS). But unlike traditional PU boards, it's glassed with epoxy resin (as opposed to polyester).

This is a more complex construction process, requiring superior craftsmanship to pull off. What you end up with is not only a whiter, cleaner, more aesthetically appealing finish, but also a livelier and more durable flex pattern (Haydenshapes estimate their epoxy to have a natural lifespan 2-3 times longer than polyester resin). Few brands are able to offer such a product.

The Loot also features a unique composite stringer, which Haydenshapes calls "iBeam flex", imparting a little extra spring and pop for a light, snappy, responsive ride. Expect a truer, more consistent flex pattern, which will last for longer, too (wooden stringers, by contrast, can warp and weaken over time).
