Handcrafted in Cornwall, the Kayu is a classic single-fin log, based on a shape the Maluku crew have been developing for over 20 years. High-performance longboarders should take their re-entries and tailslides elsewhere – this board is more akin to a longboard from the ‘60s, and demands a more cruisey approach.
The entry or nose rocker is moderate to low, designed to give you maximum glide and paddle power and get you easily into waves. There’s a single concave running through the nose, too, great for nose rides, which transitions into a slight roll or belly through the midsection. The tail has a bit more lift in the rocker, which will enhance manoeuvrability and help initiate turns, as will the double concave to vee bottom shape out the tail.
A high-volume log that’ll catch heaps of waves when it’s small and can still handle a bit of size, the Kayu can be surfed from the middle, the nose or the tail. It’s a beautiful board, and all 9’6” of it should be put to use.
