Looking for a board to get the kids started early? Maybe one you wouldn't mind catching a few on yourself?
The Bug by Ocean & Earth, which comes in user-friendly softboard construction with a twin-fin set-up, was one of our best-selling boards last summer. It's nice and stable for learning, small enough to be manageable for micro-groms, and has a soft outer layer with round edges, making it a much safer option for kids and beginners.
But more or less anyone can have fun on the Bug. Experienced surfers can muck around on it in the shore break, non-surfers can ride it as a bodyboard. At this price it's an absolute steal.
Note: The 5'2" version of the Bug comes with built-in fin boxes, which are compatible with traditional dual-tab fins, as opposed to the screw-through fin system shown in the photos. Either way the relevant fins, in soft polyurethane construction ideal for beginners, are provided with the board.
