Three fin surfboards are very popular, with this type of configuration found on everything from foamies to shortboards. A thruster consists of three of the same fin, with two placed towards the nose of the board and one further back to the tail. A 2+1 set-up is when two smaller fins are placed on either side, with a larger fin in the centre of the board. The three-fin approach is accredited to Simon Anderson, who came up with the set-up in the 80’s as he wanted to create something for high performance surfing in big waves.
